Mushroom Forage - June 2010

Tokai Forest, situated on the slopes of the Constantiaberg Mountains, is lush and green haven for cyclists, walkers and runners seeking relief from the rush of the city. While its wide range of foreign trees is a source of controversy between forest and fynbos lovers, it alsod means that Tokai offers a particularly wide range of habitats for many different types of mushrooms, both edible and poisonous. These mushrooms typically sprout after rain, making June an ideal time to get out and forage. Under the guidance of Dr Nicky Allsopp, a mushroom expert and enthusiast, Slow Food Mother City members picked a variety of mushrooms, which she identifed for us, sharing her mushroom arcania along the way. The aim of this outing was not to gather massive quantities of mushrooms (which could deplete the mushroom population), but to learn more about these fascinating fungi in their natural environment. We finished the outing off with mugs of (common garden) mushroom soup.
