Fig-picking and orchard lunch table at Hoogwater
Saturday, 11 February 2012

Join us for a convivial lunch in the shade of the peach trees at Hoogwater Farm in Wolsely, followed by a stroll through the fig orchards where you can chose the juiciest fruit for yourself.

Hoogwater farmer Charles Osche also makes wine, and will give us an introduction to them in the cellars before we move to the peach orchards for lunch. Lunch will be a table spread with homemade breads, pate, cheeses, preserves and salads (fig, blue cheese and rocket, for example), with something sweet for dessert. Then we’ll pick: The Mediterranean figs – small, plump and sweet – will be at their best when we visit.

Children are very welcome (make sure that they have water, sunscreen and hats).

To book, please add to cart above.

Spirits and food pairing at Jorgensen’s Distillery
Saturday, 25 February 2012

You probably heard about how memorable this outing was from one of the lucky handful who got to come along to this artisan Wellington distillery last year. Once again, space is limited, so book quickly.

We will be given a tour of the distillery, with an explaination of the processes and herbs used to create Jorgensens’ remarkable vodka, gin, limoncello and absinthe. This will be followed by a food and spirits pairing on the back porch of Dawn and Roger’s home, overlooking the vineyards.

The spirits are delicious, and you’ll probably want to drink quite a lot of them. Which is why we would like to hire a minibus to get us there and back. For R130 – about as much as the round-trip would cost you in petrol – you will have peace of mind getting home.

To RSVP and receive more details, please click here. Please indicate whether you would be interested in using the shuttle service.

Event Details:

Date: Saturday 25 February 2012
Time: 11.30am
Venue: Jorgensen’s Distillery, Wellington (directions will be sent to attendees)

Cost: R50, which includes the generously proportioned food-pairing. Jorgensen’s spirits will be on sale. Plus R130 if you want to relax and take the Slow Food Shuttle.

Catharina’s Meat-free Monday dinner
Monday, 2 April 2012

Whether for health, financial or environmental reasons, many people are trying to cut down on the amount of meat that they eat. Catharina’s at Steenberg Hotel has developed a three-course menu that shows off grains and veggies at their best. (The asparagus, artichoke and broad bean risotto is creamy perfection, the reviewers say.)

Chef Garth Almazan invites Slow Food guests – with a complimentary glass of wine in hand – on a guided tour of the herb garden before dinner. The garden is fed with worm-composted waste from the Catharina’s and Bistro 1682 kitchens, and chef will be using these organic herbs in your meal.

This event is not only for our vegetarian members: We heartily encourage omnivores to experience a meal that doesn’t need meat to take it into the realm of superb.

To RSVP, please click here.

Event Details:

Date: Monday 2 April 2012
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: Steenberg Hotel, Tokai.
Cost: R195 for the three-course set menu and herb garden tour (with complimentary glass of wine).
